PONY European Zone Director lauded by European Baseball Coaches Association

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (Nov. 18) - PONY Baseball and Softball is proud to announce that PONY European Zone Director Jan Bagin has received the Career Achievement Award from the European Baseball Coaches Association (EBCA) Board of Directors. Since 2005, the EBCA Career Achievement Award annually recognizes outstanding members of the European baseball community, who have made a significant difference in developing European baseball because of their dedication and passion.

EBCA Director Georg Apfelbaum said Bagin received the award because the Board felt that with his work in Prague, Czech Republic has not only helped develop the sport throughout the country, but all over Europe.

"Not only [did he assist in] creating the beautiful baseball and softball complex in Prague, but also creating, running, initializing multiple international tournaments on the adult and youth level, which helped to develop baseball in many countries," said Apfelbaum. "We would love to see people follow Jan by creating and initializing international events, an exchange between players and coaches and take him as an example."

Bagin has been involved in Czech baseball for over 40 years, and along with his brother Dan and other baseball associates, Bagin built and gradually improved the Prague Eagles facility to its current standard as one of the best baseball and softball complexes in all of Europe. In addition to overseeing the entire European Zone for PONY Baseball and Softball, Bagin is the Tournament Director of Prague Baseball Week, a renowned international competition that has existed for more than 30 years. As recent as September and October of this year, he has also directed the Pony and Colt European Qualifying Tournaments and Bronco European Zone Tournament in Gijon, Spain, and he annually directs the Pony and Colt baseball and Colt softball European Zone Championships in Prague in April.

Just like in baseball and softball, Bagin believes this award symbolizes a team effort.

"I receive it as an award also for my family, my brother Dan and my baseball friends, teammates from former Sokol Krč, now Eagles Praha," said Bagin. "We would like to establish PONY League tournaments in the countries within Europe, which later on will be transferred to PONY League competitions."
